Welcome to HotelGuide.Networks' directory of hotels and hotel reviews for the Dominican Republic!
Stunning natural beauty and challenging golf courses, along with some of
the region’s most hospitable people are hallmarks of the Dominican
Republic, popular as both a resort destination and as a cruise ship port
of call. The Dominican Republic, often called DR, occupies the eastern
two-thirds of the Island of Hispaniola, sharing lovely mountainous
terrain with Haiti. On DR, three main mountain ranges run roughly
parallel in an easterly - westerly direction. Cordillera Central, the
highest, extends from Haiti to San Cristobal in the south. It includes
Pico Duarte, the Caribbean’s highest mountain, at more than 10,000 feet,
its peak often covered by snow. To the north, Cordillera Septentrional
stretches along the Atlantic coast from Monte Cristi near the Haitian
border to San Francisco de Macorís. This mountain range divides the
Atlantic coast and the fertile Cibao valley, yielding gold that brought
Christopher Columbus rushing back after discovery of America. Finally,
near the Puerto Plata region are valleys of Cordillera Septentrional,
around Jarabacoa, a region nicknamed the Dominican Alps. Tucked amid
Cuba, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic is decidedly
Latin, compared to other Caribbean isles with British or French flavor.
DR’s history of strife, capped by rule of dictator Rafael Trujillo
(1930-1961) and civil wars (1960-1966), has evolved into comparative
political stability. Yet because the nation is poor by Caribbean
standards -- although far better off than Haiti -- value-oriented DR
vacation opportunities abound. Most tourism centers on the north coast
around Playa Dorada and Puerto Plata. Capital Santo Domingo on the south
also has intrigue, with the first cathedral, hospital, chapel, and
university. Gift shops glitter with jewelry, much of it in silver or
gold involving island amber or a light blue stone called larimar (found
only in DR’s southwest province of Barahona). In Puerto Plata, a walk
through the town center (Parque Central) leads to the fascinating Amber
Museum, housed in a
fine example of Victorian architecture. DR amber -- actually tree sap
hardened for millions of years -- is cited by experts as the world’s
most transparent, and the most valuable pieces contain fossilized plant
or insect life.
